Loving Jesus
Right now, there are only two theories of how life came into existence. Either it was an accident, a natural process that evolved over time. Or, as we believe at UBC, life was created by a Creator. This is called the theory of Intelligent Design and is held by many different worldviews around the globe. And yet, that doesn’t mean that whenever we are talking about “God,” that we are all talking about the same God. The God that we worship at Uxbridge Baptist Church is different than the gods that are revered by other religions around the world.
The Christian God is the creator of heaven and earth (Genesis 1:1), who sustains the fabric of His creation by His will (Revelation 4:10). And everything He created was good, (Genesis 1:31). However, as humans, we rebelled against God and through our rebellion we brought sin and death into His creation (Genesis 3). And yet even in our evil, God’s love for us never waived. For although we deserved death, God himself paid the penalty for our transgressions through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross(Romans 3:21-26). And because of Jesus, those who receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour are reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-21).
God is the Supreme Being; the Creator and Ruler of all that is; the Self-existent One who is perfect in power, goodness, and wisdom. Sometimes, people will make the comparison that God is like us, only greater but this can’t be true. Because humans are finite, and God is infinite and therefore beyond what we are capable of understanding (Psalm 147:5). And therefore we should expect that we can only understand God in a limited sense as He has revealed himself to us.
The Bible is a collection of 66 books, written by about 40 authors over 1500 years. Specifically, the Bible is divided into two main parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is derived of 38 books, and centers on the nation of Israel. The New Testament is 27 books, and focused on the person of Jesus Christ.
At Uxbridge Baptist Church, we believe that the Bible is God’s written word (2 Timothy 3:16-17), His written testimony of how He has revealed Himself throughout human history. Therefore, it is our belief that the Bible, in its original writings, is inerrant, infallible, relevant, and sufficient.
And because the Bible is God’s word, we can hear God’s voice in our present day. Hebrews 4:12 says that “the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” As people, we can turn to the Bible for wisdom, conviction, encouragement, and direction as God reveals Himself through His written word, and speaks into our lives. Therefore, at UBC, we believe that the Bible stands as our ultimate authority for life, faith and practise.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
As a historical fact, Jesus is a man who lived 2,000 years ago in the nation of Israel and almost every religion has something to say about Him. Some see Him as a moral teacher, others as a prophet, but Christianity uniquely claims that Jesus is God Himself (John 1:1).
In the Godhead, Jesus is known as the Son, equal with and distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit. Through Him all things were created and in Him he holds all things together (1 Colossians 1:16-17). And because of human sin, Jesus descended from Heaven to Earth so that He could reconcile humanity to God through his death on the cross. This was possible because Jesus himself lived a perfect life and therefore was able to bear the penalty in our place (2 Corinthians 5:21).
The life of Jesus is documented in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Fully God and fully man, Jesus was born in Bethlehem to a virgin named Mary and later moved to Egypt, and then to Nazareth. When He was about 30 years old, Jesus began His public ministry, revealing God to the nation of Israel and performing miracles such as healing the sick, feeding the hungry, restoring sight to the blind and raising the dead to life. The Jewish authorities, however, accused Jesus of blasphemy because He claimed to be God. Therefore, they delivered Him to the Romans, who beat and crucified Him. But then, on the third day, Jesus rose from the dead, vindicating His claim to be the Son of God. He remained with His disciples for a short time before ascending back to Heaven. Today, Jesus sits at the Father’s side and intercedes on our behalf.
How Can I Be Saved?
How Can I Be Saved?
Salvation is the saving faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour and to understand salvation in its fullness, we have to go all the way back to the beginning. Genesis 1:1 tells us that God created the Heavens and the Earth and that everything He created was good (Genesis 1:25). And as the crowning jewel of His creation, God created people, He created Adam and Eve. And Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden to live in perfect relationship with God. However, tempted by Satan, Adam and Eve rebelled against God and in their rebellion, sin and death came into the world and Adam and Eve were cast out of the garden (Genesis 3). This is our current reality. Because of our sinful actions and rebellion against God, like Adam and Eve we have been separated from God.
And yet, God’s love for us continued to pursue us. In His justice, He couldn’t overlook our sin and so He came down from Heaven to bear the punishment of our sin. God the father, sent Jesus, God the son into the world. And Jesus lived a perfect life. “God made [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in [Jesus] we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus came to bring God’s revelation to the world, and in His love, he was rejected, scorned, beaten and crucified. Yet, Jesus conquered death, and on the third day was resurrected in glory and vindication as the Christ, the Son of God.
Salvation is the active belief that Jesus lived, died for our sins, and was resurrected. That He is the Christ, the Son of God. And in our belief, we are redeemed and justified before God as we commit our lives follow Jesus .
Salvation is free & available to Everyone!
Salvation is not about what we can do, but what Jesus has already done for us. Salvation is to receive Jesus’ gift of eternal life, made possible through his death and resurrection. And therefore, to receive salvation, all you need to do is ask for it. As Christians, this is sometimes referred to asking Jesus into your heart as a symbol of declaring Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. Below, we have included a sample prayer that someone might pray to receive salvation, however, we would also be thrilled to sit down with you and pray alongside you. If you would like to talk to us about salvation, please fill out the forum.
“Jesus, I believe that you are the Son of God and Savior of the world. I believe that you died for my sins and rose from the dead. I believe that through your sacrifice, I am a new person. Forgive me for my sin and fill me with your Spirit. Today, I choose to follow you for the rest of my life as Lord of my life. Amen.”
